November 2023-Tarpauline

Carnivale on the Green: A Railcar Based Traveling Carnival Railcar #35,36,37

TARPAULIN MAINTENANCE CARS

Traveling venues of any kind have always needed portable structures for their operations that were easy to transport, setup and tear down.  The obvious choice has always been the tent, a simple wood pole supported canvas structure.  With constant handling and exposure to the elements, these canvas 'buildings' would require cleaning and repair on a regular basis.

CAR #35  LAUNDRY

This car is equipped with a post WWII Czechoslovak V3-S military heavy duty washing machine that were designed and built specifically for use in the field and quickly became a perfect fit in the traveling circus and carnival world. The cleaned canvas panels were then spread out on saw horses using spare tent poles as racks to dry.

CAR #36 LAUNDRY

This car is equipped with a post WWII Czechoslovak V3-S military heavy duty washing machine that were designed and built specifically for use in the field and quickly became a perfect fit in the traveling circus and carnival world. The cleaned canvas panels were then spread out on saw horses using spare tent poles as racks to dry.

CAR #37  SUPPLIES

Everything needed for tarpaulin maintenance is carried on this car along with other supplies and tools.

Each were built on the basic flat car.  The washing machine, tables, cabinet, figures and saw horses are 3D prints.  Scale dowels were used for the tent poles.  The sewing machines are commercial pieces.

The rollback canvas roof on cars #35 & #36 are new additions to the CARNIVALE cars.  Among comments from visitors at my brothers' open layout during the National Convention last July about the CARNIVALE cars, compliments were given on the car's interior details but wished they were easier to view.  Trying to remedy this, one idea was to just make the cars with no roofs but they would appear unfinished and not be realistic.  The roll back canvas (tent like) roof gives the realism of the existence of a roof while and giving the ability to view the car's interior.  This new roof idea will be utilized when useful in future builds.
