ROSIE-THE WORLD'S LONGEST FLYING HUMAN CANNON BALL
RAILCAR #4: CANNON CAR
RAILCAR #5: CATCH NET CAR
Every circus and carnival worth its weight featured a human cannon ball act. Spring loaded 'cannons' shoot the performer an acceptable distance into a net with a loud bang and a puff of smoke. CARNIVALE'S attraction had to be more spectacular than the usual being it was billed as the longest of all human cannon ball shots. Of course it would be a ruse. Built and performed on rail cars, this was an easy one to create.
First, to make it the world's longest shot, the cannon and net cars would have to be separated a large distance. By using enough rail cars, there would be no viewing location where the crowd could see both the shot and the landing............the ruse.
The barker would work up the crowd and introduce ROSIE. After ROSIE was helped into the mouth of the cannon the countdown would begin. With an exceedingly loud bang that came from somewhere to the left of the cannon (a perfectly timed misdirection) with an immense release of smoke from the cannon.......... eyes left, eyes right..........ROSIE was gone. After the crowd dispersed ROSIE #1 (yup, there are 2 ROSIES) would exit out of costume via a trap door on the backside of the cannon.............the sham, part 1.
The crowd that was anxiously waiting at the net car would hear that exceedingly loud bang, would turn and see the smoke cloud in the distance (the same perfectly timed misdirection), ROSIE #2 would pop up unnoticed from the backside of the rail car and into the net............eyes left, eyes right............ROSIE'S flight was a success............the sham, part 2.
The amazing part of the ruse was the fact that if you talked with anyone in the crowd, they would claim to actually have seen ROSIE flying through the air...................TRUE
*Editor’s note: If you've been following the CARNIVALE articles, a set of twins seems to show up in most of the 'TRUE' stories; Roller skaters from Bakersfield, High wire act, Pole Dancers, Snakes on Skates, Dancing Pop Tarts, Alfred and Alfred, now ROSIE and probably more I can't recall. Are they the same twins playing all these parts? But more importantly what's with the twin obsession Jim?
