THE RIDE ......The latest and hottest midway ride was the FLYING TOASTERS. The rider could raise and lower the toaster as the ride turns. This was a usual feature on many rides, but with these toasters the raising and lowering of the toaster accordingly raised and lowered the internal temperature as with a real toaster. Ah, the 'dark side' of this CARNIVALE ride emerges.
THE CHALLENGE......This is a basic money making 'ego test' scam. The challenge was to raise the toaster and temperature higher and longer than the other riders. The hottest winner won a box of POP TARTS as the prize. Accumulating these 'wins' during the carnival stay, the rider with the most boxes of POP TARTS at the Carnivale's closing, received the grand prize of a year's supply of POP TARTS.
THE SCAM......The ride is operated only when all the toasters are occupied. A single ticket price would cover the POP TART BOX prize which contained only 3 tarts. The grand prize of a year's supply actually amounts to only one box of 3 tarts per week. And it has been rumored that the tarts were re-boxed generics and past the pull date..............True
END SCAM......The bare metal handles, controls and seats inside the toasters can scald the riders at the maximum temperature setting (as designed). When the rider detoasters the flying toaster – same as when you deplane the airplane – they would quickly go to the Red Cross Nurse for ointment and Band-Aids (again as designed). BUT........she is not an actual Red Cross Nurse, but a Carney in costume working the donation plate. The final money squeeze................True
*NOTE......BILLY THE BOX is credited for coining the popular phrase “IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT THEN STAY OUT OF THE TOASTER” (eventually it was changed to the kitchen)...........Probably True
